The Weight That Wasn't in the Circumstances

Sam arrived three weeks after she'd been made redundant.

​

She was measured in the way she spoke about it. Careful. She'd clearly been over the story many times already, with those close to her, with friends, with herself in the early hours when sleep wouldn't come. The facts were well ordered. Fifteen years at the same company. Senior position. Good track record. A restructure. Forty people let go on the same day. Nothing personal.

She knew it wasn't personal. She'd been told it wasn't personal. She could see, rationally, that it wasn't personal.

​

And yet.

​

"It feels like I've been found out," she said. "Like they finally saw through me and this was the excuse they needed."

​

She paused.

​

"Which I know doesn't make sense."

​

"Why doesn't it make sense?" I asked.

​

"Because forty other people were let go at the same time. It was a business decision. It had nothing to do with me specifically."

​

"So the situation is clear," I said. "A restructure. Forty people. A business decision. Nothing personal."

​

"Yes."

​

"And the experience you're having is?"

​

She looked at me for a moment.

​

"Like I've failed. Like I'm exposed. Like everything I built for fifteen years has been pulled out from under me and now everyone can see I was never as good as they thought."

​

"Where is that coming from?" I asked. "The restructure? Or something else?"

​

She didn't answer immediately.

​

The Same Room, Ten Different People

I asked Sam to think about the thirty-nine other people who had been made redundant on the same day.

​

"How do you think they're experiencing it?" I asked.

​

She thought about it carefully.

​

"Differently," she said. "Some of them seemed almost relieved. A couple I spoke to were already excited about what comes next. One guy was furious, but about the process, not about himself."

​

"And you?"

"I feel like I've been exposed."

​

"Same situation," I said. "Same room. Same redundancy. Completely different experiences."

​

She nodded slowly.

​

"Which means the experience isn't coming from the redundancy."

​

A pause.

​

"It's coming from what I'm making the redundancy mean."

​

She said it quietly, almost to herself. Like she'd just noticed something that had been in plain sight the whole time.

​

What the Interpretation Was Doing

We spent some time looking at what Sam's mind had done with the redundancy.

​

The facts were straightforward. A company restructure. A business decision. Forty people. Nothing personal.

​

But the interpretation had been running a completely different story.

​

Through the lens of a core belief that had been operating quietly for most of her adult life, a conviction that her worth was contingent on her performance, that she was only as good as her last result, that underneath the competence and the track record something insufficient was waiting to be discovered, the redundancy had become evidence.

​

Not of a business decision. Of the thing she'd always feared was true.

​

The situation was a restructure. The interpretation was exposure.

​

And it was the interpretation, not the restructure, that was generating the experience she'd been living in for three weeks.

​

"The redundancy didn't create that feeling," I said. "It just gave the interpretation something to point at."

​

She sat with that for a moment.

​

"So the feeling was already there."

​

"The belief was already there. The feeling was what the belief generated when it found something to confirm it."

​

"And if I'd been one of the people who felt relieved?"

​

"The same belief wouldn't have been running. Same situation. Different interpretation. Different experience."

​

The Situation Returns to Neutral

Something shifted in Sam's face when she saw this clearly.

​

Not dramatically. Not a sudden release or an emotional moment. Just a quiet settling. The kind that happens when something that had been held tightly is allowed to loosen slightly.

​

"So the situation itself isn't the problem," she said.

​

"The situation is just what happened. A restructure. Forty people. A business decision."

​

"And the weight I've been carrying."

​

"Was never in the circumstances."

​

She nodded.

​

"It was in what I decided the circumstances meant about me."

​

That's the moment the situation returns to neutral. Not because anything changed. Not because the redundancy became less real or the practical challenges disappeared. Those remained exactly as they were. Sam still needed to find a new position. The financial pressure was real. The disruption to her daily life was real.

​

But the layer underneath all of that, the interpretation that had turned a business decision into personal exposure, that layer lost its authority when it was seen clearly for what it was.

​

Not a fact. A thought. A familiar, well-practised, completely convincing thought that had arrived and attached itself to a set of neutral circumstances and been mistaken for a read-out of what those circumstances meant.

​

The circumstances were always neutral.

​

The interpretation was always the variable.

​

What Changed

Sam didn't leave that session with a new job or a resolved situation. The practical reality of her redundancy was exactly as it had been when she arrived.

​

What changed was where she was standing in relation to it.

​

Before, she had been inside the interpretation. Living in the feeling it generated. Treating the weight as something the circumstances had placed on her, something she needed to either resolve or endure until things improved.

​

After, she could see the interpretation clearly enough that it no longer had the same authority. The redundancy was a redundancy. A difficult, disruptive, genuinely challenging set of circumstances that required a practical response.

​

But it wasn't exposure. It wasn't evidence. It wasn't confirmation of the thing she'd always feared was true.

​

It was just what had happened.

​

And from that more neutral place, the response became cleaner. Less driven by the need to repair something that the interpretation had decided was broken. More proportionate. More directed at what was actually there rather than what the interpretation had added to it.

​

Three months later Sam sent a short message.

"I've just accepted a new role. Better than the one I had. But that's not the interesting part. The interesting part is that I spent three weeks devastated by something that turned out to be about a thought I was having, not about what actually happened. I keep noticing it now. How often the weight isn't in the situation at all."

​

That's the shift.

​

Not from difficult circumstances to easy ones.

​

From living inside the interpretation to being able to see it clearly enough that it stops running the show.

​

The situation was always neutral.

​

It just took seeing the interpretation clearly to make that obvious.
