you stop restarting unhappiness.
Free First
Most approaches to happiness begin with the same assumption.
That freedom is somewhere ahead of you.
With enough understanding, healing, practice or change, perhaps you'll eventually arrive at the place where things finally feel okay.
We begin somewhere different.
You are free first.
Not eventually.
Before anything needs to change.
Before the belief
Take something familiar:
I'm not good enough.
It feels like a statement about you.
And because it feels true, the natural response is to work on the belief. To understand where it came from, challenge it, replace it or try to become good enough that it finally disappears.
But look a little closer.
Before the words I'm not good enough appear, there is often something more immediate.
A sensation.
Tightness.
Heaviness.
Emptiness.
A contraction.
A feeling of lack.
In itself, that sensation doesn't say I'm not good enough.
It doesn't say anything.
The meaning is added.
At some point, conditioning learned to interpret that particular feeling as meaning something about you.
There's something wrong with me.
I'm inadequate.
I'm unworthy.
I'm unlovable.
I'm unsafe.
I don't matter.
I don't belong.
The sensation and the meaning become so closely associated that eventually they appear to be one thing.
You don't simply think I'm not good enough.
You feel that you are.
What does 'me' feel like?
This is why understanding a belief isn't always enough.
You can know you're good enough and still feel inadequate.
You can know someone loves you and still feel unlovable.
You can know you're safe and still feel unsafe.
Intellectually, the belief may make no sense at all.
But something still feels true.
So rather than asking whether the belief is true, we can ask a different question.
What does not good enough actually feel like?
Not why you feel it.
Not when it started.
Not what happened to you.
What tells you, right now, that you're not good enough?
Attention moves out of the explanation and into the actual experience.
Perhaps there is tightness in the chest.
A hollow feeling in the stomach.
Pressure.
Restlessness.
Contraction.
Now, for a moment, don't call it inadequacy.
Don't call it fear.
Don't call it me.
What's actually there?
Sensation.
Before the meaning
This is where something very simple can be seen.
The sensation itself doesn't contain the problem.
Tightness doesn't contain I'm inadequate.
Heaviness doesn't contain I'm unlovable.
A contraction doesn't contain something is wrong with me.
Those meanings are added.
And when they're added, something impersonal becomes personal.
This is happening to me.
This says something about me.
This is how I am.
From there, the familiar Mindline can begin.
The feeling becomes evidence for the core belief.
The core belief shapes interpretation.
Interpretation shapes experience.
And soon there is a whole world organised around something that began as sensation.
Look again
Stay with the sensation itself.
Before the name.
Before the explanation.
Before trying to make it go away.
You may notice that it isn't nearly as solid as the story about it.
It moves.
Changes.
Intensifies.
Softens.
Perhaps disappears.
Perhaps another sensation appears somewhere else.
And something else becomes noticeable.
There isn't necessarily an inadequate person inside the sensation.
There is sensation.
The me was part of the interpretation.
This doesn't mean pretending that feelings aren't happening.
Quite the opposite.
It means experiencing them more directly, before the mind tells you what they mean.
The Mindline isn't continuous
The Mindline can feel like one continuous experience.
This is who I am.
This is how I've always felt.
This problem is always here.
But look at actual experience.
A thought appears.
Then it isn't there.
A sensation appears.
Changes.
Disappears.
Another thought appears.
A sound catches your attention.
For a moment you're absorbed in something.
Then the familiar feeling returns.
The mind joins these separate moments together and creates the impression of continuity.
Like a film made from individual frames, the movement appears seamless.
But the continuity isn't actually there.
The Mindline is being reconstructed.
Again.
And again.
And again.
This matters.
Because something that has to be continually reconstructed isn't the solid, permanent thing it appears to be.
What happens when it isn't reconstructed?
Nothing special.
Life.
A sound.
A breath.
A sensation.
Someone speaking.
Sunlight through a window.
Walking across a room.
Making tea.
There doesn't have to be a noticeable gap, a special state or a moment of profound stillness.
Most of the time you don't notice it at all.
You notice the Mindline because it says something.
You don't notice its absence because there is nothing to report.
And yet this ordinary absence tells us something important.
The Mindline isn't holding you together.
The feeling of me doesn't need to be maintained.
The problem isn't continuously present.
It is recreated.
Free First
This is what we mean by Free First.
Freedom isn't what appears at the end of successfully fixing the Mindline.
It is what was already the case before the Mindline told you otherwise.
Before sensation became my problem.
Before the core belief told you what the sensation meant.
Before experience was organised around something being wrong, missing or unresolved.
Nothing needs to be added to reveal it.
In fact, adding tends to obscure it.
The attempt to become free begins with the assumption that you aren't.
The search for peace begins with the assumption that peace is missing.
The attempt to finally become enough begins by recreating the feeling that you aren't.
And the Mindline has begun again.
Nothing to maintain
Free First isn't another state to hold on to.
You don't need to watch every thought.
You don't need to catch every Mindline.
You don't need to remain permanently present.
You don't need to spend your life monitoring whether you've restarted.
That would simply become another Mindline.
The invitation is much simpler.
See what is actually happening.
Feel what is actually there.
Notice where sensation becomes personal.
Notice where meaning is added.
Notice where this is happening becomes this is happening to me.
And notice that the whole construction has to begin again each time.
When it isn't being constructed, nothing is missing.
Nothing needs resolving.
There is simply life as it is.
Not a better version of you.
Not an improved state.
Not something waiting behind the Mindline.
What was already here before anything said it wasn't enough.
Free first.

If something here has resonated, the next step is simply a conversation.
A private conversation with Marcus or Lisa won't give you something new to carry. It might just help you put down something you've been carrying for a long time.
